Substances that open "heart holes" and restore consciousness are known as resuscitation-promoting or analeptic substances.
These penetrate the heart meridian and restore consciousness in patients in a comatose state. They are used in loss of consciousness in febrile illnesses, stroke, epilepsy and syncope due to heat attack in the pericardium or phlegm and turbidity obstructing the "holes of the heart".
The obstruction can be hot or cold:
- Warm type is due to heat pathogen, occurring fever, reddened face, convulsion, red tongue with yellow coating and rapid pulse. It should be combined with herbs that purge heat and toxins, freshen the blood and eliminate the wind.
- Cold type is due to cold pathogen or cloudy phlegm, manifesting body cold, cyanosis, throat discomfort due to phlegm, pale tongue with white coating and slow pulse. It should be combined with herbs that eliminate cold and activate Qi.
Analeptic substances are used in emergency cases and have a potent dispersive action, should be used with caution as it is likely damage to primordial Qi and used in pill or powder form and rarely in decoction. As they are volatile substances, they can be lost when heated.
