ASTRINGENT FORMULAS
They are strategic combinations for astringing, that is, holding qi, blood, sperm and body fluids that are in a state of spontaneous loss due to lack of control of essential substances in the body.
They are classified into formulas for:
1. Firm the surface and stop sweating.
2. Tone the lungs and stop coughing.
3. Astrings intestinal fluid and ceases discharge.
4. Astringe sperm and stop spermatorrhea.
5. Stop uterine bleeding and leukorrhea.
Astringent formulas are used as a method of treating appearance and not foundation and should be combined with toning herbs in order to treat both appearance and foundation. It is prohibited to apply the present method to cases of existence of pathogenic excess while suffering from sweat loss due to febrile illness, superficial syndrome, cough with an abundance of tan-yin, spermatorrhea caused by emotional agitation, diarrhea due to food irregularity, humid heat or uterine bleeding due to heat in the blood as otherwise it may "keep the enemy in the house with the door closed".
1. FIRM THE SURFACE AND CEASE THE SWEAT
a) Yu Biao Zhi Han - tonifies the qi, firm the surface and stops sweating. Used for physically weak state with insufficient defensive energy and failure to firm the surface layer making it vulnerable to external wind attack with manifestation of spontaneous sweating, profuse sweating, shivering in the wind, pale and withered face.
Tongue: pale and white coat.
Pulse: shallow, empty and rapid.
Used when the patient is sensitive to wind attack due to defensive weakness of the superficial layer.
IT'S inconvenient in cases of spontaneous sweating caused by external wind attack and profuse sweating due to insufficiency of Yin.
b) Mu Li San - tonifies the Qi and firm the surface, astringents the yin and stops sweating. Used for qi and yin insufficiency with spontaneous night sweats with startles and heart palpitations, shortness of breath and tiredness.
Tongue : pale red.
Pulse: Fine and weak.
It is inconvenient to use this formula with false fire exuberance.
2. FIRM THE LUNG AND CEASE COUGHING
For cases of gasping cough with spontaneous sweating with a rapid empty pulse caused by chronic coughing and pulmonary insufficiency with heavily consumed qi and yin.
a) Jiu Xian San - firm the lung and stops coughing, tonifies qi and nourishes yin. For pulmonary insufficiency syndrome due to chronic cough with incessant coughing with spontaneous sweating, wheezing, cough with little sticky sputum, rapid empty pulse.
It treats chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema characterized by lung failure and chronic cough.
* Inconvenient to use in chronic cough with a lot of internal expectoration with exopathogen in the superficial layer.
3. ASTRING THE INTESTINE AND CEASING DOWNLOADING
To treat diarrhea and chronic dysentery, fecal incontinence due to failure of confinement caused by insufficiency and cold in the spleen and kidney.
a) Zhen Ren Yang Zang Tang - warms and tones the spleen and stomach, restricts the bowel and stops diarrhea. For cases of diarrhea and chronic dysentery due to insufficiency and absence of heat in the spleen and stomach with manifestations of diarrhea or chronic dysentery and fecal incontinence, abdominal pain with preference to heat and palpation, dysentery with stool mixed with blood, feeling of tenesmus with stool mixed with blood and pus associated with tiredness, anorexia.
Tongue: pale and white coat.
Pulse: Deep and slow.
It is inconvenient to apply for food stagnation in the stomach and intestine and for moist heat in them.
b) Si Shen Wan - warms the kidney and spleen, restricts the intestines and stops diarrhea. Used to treat early morning diarrhea due to cold insufficiency of the spleen and kidney with manifestations of lack of appetite, chronic diarrhea with no sign of improvement associated with abdominal pain, weakness and pain in the spine and cold in the limbs, fatigued and lackluster appearance.
Tongue: pale and thin white coat.
Pulse: Deep, slow and weak.
It is inconvenient to use in diarrhea caused by food stagnation or damp heat in the stomach and intestine.
4. ASTRING SPERM AND TREAT INCONTINENCE
Used for spermatorrhea disease or sperm incontinence due to insufficiency and kidney failure to confine sperm to treat urinary incontinence or urinary frequency due to bladder storage failure.
a) Jin Suo Gu Jing Wan - tonifies the kidney and restricts the sperm. Treats spermatorrhoea due to kidney failure with spermatorrhoea, premature ejaculation or sperm incontinence, physical fatigue and emotional discouragement, low back pain and weakness, ringing in the ears.
Pale tongue and white coat,
Pulse: Fine and weak.
*It should not be used with exuberance of the heart or liver fire or in case of humid heat.
b) Sang Piao Xiao San - tones and harmonizes the heart and kidney, astringents the essence and confines the sperm. It treats failure to confine sperm due to the double insufficiency of the heart and kidney, lack of coordination between water and fire. It presents manifestations such as urinary frequency, or milky urine, anxiety and lack of mental control, amnesia or spermatorrhea in erotic dreams.
Tongue: pale and white coat.
Pulse: Fine and weak.
* It is inconvenient to use for burning when urinating due to moist heat in the lower heater and for spleen and kidney yang insufficiency.
c) Suo Quan Wan - warms the kidney, expels the cold, condenses the urine and strengthens its lockdown. In cases of absence of heat and insufficiency in the lower heater with urinary frequency or frequent incontinence of urine, in case of infantile nocturnal enuresis.
Tongue: pale.
Pulse: Deep and weak.
Used to treat urinary frequency of nervous characteristic, or due to insufficiency and cold of the spleen and kidney, and used for nasal discharge due to insufficiency of the spleen and kidney.
5. STOP UTERINE HEMORRHAGE AND CEASE VAGINAL RUNNING
a) Gu Jing Wan - Nourishes yin and eliminates heat, stops bleeding and retains leukorrhea discharge. Treats due to internal heat produced by low yin level with manifestations of menorrhagia with constant shedding of blood, dark red or even black and sticky with heat in the centers of the palm and soles, painful weakness in the spine and knees.
Tongue: red.
Pulse: bowstring is fast.
Treats menstrual bleeding due to dysfunction uterine or menorrhagia due to chronic inflammation from insufficiency of the yin and heat in the blood.
b) Wan Dai Tang - tonifies the center and stimulates the spleen, transforms moisture and stops leukorrhea. treats insufficiency of spleen qi and failure of the spleen to maintain transformation and transport, resulting in precipitation of moisture shifting to the lower part of the body, forming leukorrhea. weak with watery diarrhea.
Tongue: pale and white coat.
Pulse: Floating and slow or floating and weak.
Treats excess leukorrhea due to insufficiency of the spleen and exuberance of moisture.
* Do not use in yellow or white leukorrhea mixed with blood and due to heat sedimentation humid.
