PURGATIVE FORMULAS

  These are formulas that treat internal excess syndrome by discharging food accumulations, accumulations of heat, water and cold that are stagnant in the stomach and intestine, accumulations of dryness and the mixture of pathogenic excess.

1. Cold proprietary formula (Da Cheng Qi Tang) to discharge heat build-up.

2. Warm property formula (Wen Pi Tang) to discharge cold buildup.

3. Lubricating proprietary formula (Ma Zi Ren Tang) to treat dryness accumulation.

4. Formula to drain fluid accumulation (Da Zao Tang) drains pathogenic fluid.

5. Formula for unloading and toning at the same time

- Ji Chuan Jian - For Kidney Deficiency Constipation.

- Zeng Ye Cheng Qi Tang - for heat constipation due to injury to the Yin.

 

   It is inconvenient to apply purgatives before resolving the superficial syndrome or internal excess.

   The purgative should be discontinued as soon as the disease is under control. Long-term use can damage the patient's vital energy.

   It is important to avoid fatty foods after having discharged the internal excess.

   In case of deficient vital energy and excess of the pathogen we must use formula that purges and tonifies simultaneously.

 

1. COLD PURGATIVES

 

​   To treat internal excess syndrome formed by heat build-up with constipation. They are used to treat stool accumulation with manifestations of fullness in the stomach and abdominal area, associated with painful sensation and rejection of palpation, tidal heat and delirium.

Tongue: with yellow coating

Pulse: full

a) From Cheng Qi Tang - Drastically discharge heat accumulations. In cases of yangming fu (stomach) excess syndrome with symptoms of tidal heat, delirium, constant sweating of the hands and feet, watery diarrhea, abdominal pain around the navel and emotional agitation.

   This formula treats simple bowel obstruction or adhesion obstruction such as acute cholecystitis or appendicitis.

   It is inconvenient to use this formula in patients who do not have heat build-up in the stomach and intestine.

   Its function is to relax accumulations of heat, heat from dryness in the stomach and intestines and manifestations with dry mouth, anxiety, moist heat and hematemesis, painful swelling in the throat and gums.

​​ 2. HEATER PURGATIVE FORMULA

   For internal excess syndrome characterized by stagnant cold accumulations in the stomach and intestines.

   Symptoms of fullness and heaviness in the stomach region, abdominal pain with a preference for heat, cold or icy hands and feet.

Pulse: deep and tense

​​ a) Wen Pi Tang  - Its function is to warm and tonify the spleen yang, drastically discharging stagnant accumulations of cold.

   Used to treat Spleen yang insufficiency and cold stagnation with manifestations of constipation, painful fullness, cold hands and feet.

Tongue: white coating with thick layer

Pulse: deep and bowstring

   This formula is excellent in purgative and tonifying function, treating the manifestation and the root.

 

3. LUBRICANT AND LAXATIVE FORMULA

   It is  Lubricant and laxative formula treats constipation due to dryness in the intestinal duct by exhaustion of fluid such as blood.

a) Ma Zi Ren - Lubricates the intestine and stimulates defecation, purges heat and moves the Qi in restricted Spleen syndrome with dryness in the stomach and intestine, constipation and urinary frequency.

   Suitable for the elderly, physically weak patients or occasional constipation.

   This formula is inconvenient to use in patients with yin insufficiency or pregnant women.

   Key indication: excess dryness, lack of body fluids and blood.

4. FORMULA TO DRAIN PATHOGENIC LIQUID

   These are drastic action formulas that treat internal excess by integrating heat with water. They are applied in diseases of thoracic and abdominal dropsy, generalized edema, difficulty in defecation and urination, deep and strong pulse.

a) Shi Zao Tang - Dramatically drains the pathogenic fluid for physically strong patient with fluid in the chest cavity and edema under the hypochondrium, chest pain when coughing and painful depression under the heart, vomiting without content, shallow breathing, headache, dizziness, difficulty  rest lying down due to pain. Patients with liver cirrhosis, exudative pleuritis and/or chronic nephritis.

Pulse: deep and slippery

Tongue: wet and slippery coating

 

  

5. DRAIN AND TONIFY SIMULTANEOUSLY

   These formulas are for cases of insufficiency of vital energy when there is an internal excess.

 

a) Ji Chuan Jian - Warms the kidney and supplements the essence, lubricates the intestinal canal and facilitates defecation.

   Used in elderly people with stool accumulation, cold in the bladder and clear urine, dizziness, blurred vision, weakness and lassitude of the spine and lower limbs.

b) Zeng Ye Cheng Qi Tang - Treats yin deficiency and excess heat by nourishing yin and supplementing Ye (dense organic liquid), discharges heat4 and facilitates defecation.

   This treats heat agglomeration and deficient yin characterized by dry trapped stools, intestinal obstruction, dry mouth and dry throat. This formula softens abdominal lumps and moistens dry mouth, throat and cracked lips.

Tongue: Red with yellow coating and little saliva
