Substances that regulate qi
Chen Pi - Ju Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) - 3 to 10 g
Qing Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride) - 3 to 10 g
Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus. Synonymy: Fructus Citri or Ponciri Immaturus) - 3 to 10 g
- Zhi Qiao or Zhi ke (Fructus Aurantii) - 3 to 10 g
- Fo Shou (Fructus Citri Sarcodactylis) - Cider - 3 to 10 g
Mu Xiang (Radix Saussureae ou Vladimiriae) - 3 to 10 g
Xiang Fu (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi) - Root of sedge - 6 to 12 g
They are suitable for:
- Stagnation of spleen and stomach Qi giving abdominal pain and distension and loss of appetite;
- Stagnation of liver Qi marked with subcostal pain;
- Stomach Qi inversion with nausea, belching and hiccups;
- Lung Qi inversion with cough and dyspnea (asthma).
Substances that regulate qi are aromatic, spicy and bitter. They have the function of circulating the Qi, relieving the middle burner, removing the stagnation of the Qi, stopping the pain, reversing the direction of the Qi, strengthening the spleen, and harmonizing the stomach.
Stagnation and Qi inversion are divided into types: cold, heat, deficiency and excess and should be prescribed according to their symptoms:
- Stagnation of Qi with retention of cold with substances that warm the interior;
- Stagnation of Qi that turns into fire with purgatives of heat;
- Qi stagnation with phlegm and moisture retention with diuretics;
- Stagnation of Qi and Blood with circulation activators;
- Stagnation of Qi and deficiency of the spleen and stomach with spleen and Qi tonics.
Always be cautious in patients with qi and yin deficiency as qi regulators are warm and dry and can consume qi and yin.
