Formulas for regulating Qi are strategic combinations that regulate or harmonize the movement of qi. They work to move qi and descend qi, are applied to treat illnesses with qi stagnation or qi inversion.

   Diseases are classified according to their function.  not normal. For this we must:

1. Tonify the qi to make up for the deficiency.

2. Move qi to remove stagnation.

3. Descend qi to reverse the reversal.

   The formulas fall into two categories:

1. Formulas for moving qi .

   - Used to treat diseases caused  by qi stagnation, whose manifestations are discomfort of painful heaviness and swelling in the thoraco-hypochondric or diaphragm-hypochondric regions and even with nodules formed such as hernias, etc.

2. Formulas for descending qi .

   - Treat diseases with qi inversion such as lung qi inversion, gastric qi inversion (choking, nausea and vomiting. There may be symptoms of coughing or wheezing, hiccup, gastric reflux,  nausea or vomiting, etc.

   * These can easily consume qi and harm yin, so use should be discontinued once the disease is under control and not prolonged use.

   * Be cautious when applying in case of attending pregnant patients or patients with decreased yin.

1. FORMULAS TO MOVE THE IQ

​

   Moving qi formulas regulate and relax the movement of qi and are applied for qi stagnation disorders, usually characterized by qi stagnation in the spleen and stomach as well as the liver.

​

a) Chai Hu Shu Gan San - soothe the liver and relax depression, move qi and soothe pain. For liver depression with qi stagnation characterized by pain in the hypochondrium regions, intermittent heat and chills, straining to inhale air and sighing, fullness discomfort and swelling in the gastro-abdominal region, bowstring pulse.

   Used for chronic hepatitis, chronic gastritis, intercostal neuritis from qi stagnation.

   * It is inconvenient to use in case of exuberance of liver fire (angry) or damp heat in the liver.

b) Yue Ju Wan - moving qi and relaxing depression. It treats a mild syndrome characterized as depressive discomfort due to stagnation of qi (energy), xue (blood), tan (mucosity), fire (anger), dampness, food, etc. with main manifestations of depressive discomfort in the thoracic-diaphragmatic region, swollen pain in the gastro-abdominal region, with sighing, hiccuping and acid gastric reflex, nausea and vomiting, difficult and slow digestion.

Tongue:  greasy white coating

Pulse: bowstring.

   It treats gastric neurasthenia, gastric and duodenal ulcers, chronic gastritis, pain caused by gallstones, hepatitis, intercostal pain, emotional depression, dysmenorrhea and irregular menstruation if due to emotional depression.

   * It is not suitable for treating insufficiency syndrome.

c) Gua Lou Xie Bai Bai Jiu Tang - clears channels to promote yang and disintegrate nodules, move qi and expel phlegm. Treats pain caused by chest obstruction with manifestations of painful chest discomfort that radiates to the back, feeling short of breath, sighing with wheezing, coughing with sputum with a white greasy coating, deep and bowstring or deep and tense pulse.

   * It is inconvenient to apply for cases of chest pain with insufficiency syndrome, nor for chest pain with accumulation of noisy mucus.

d) Jin Ling Zi San - moves qi and soothes liver, purges liver fire, moves blood and soothes pain. Treats fire syndrome produced by liver qi depression with manifestations of painful discomfort  cardiac chest, abdominal chest and hypochondrium with periodic and intermittent pain, bitter mouth.

Tongue: red and yellow coating.

Pulse: Wiry and fast.

   It treats liver qi stagnation syndrome with liver depression or anger associated with pain and blood stasis.

   * Ideal formula to treat pain from stagnation.

e) Ban Xia Hou Po Tang - moves qi and disintegrates nodules, dominates inversion and transforms mucus. Used for manifestations of sensation of a foreign object stuck in the throat, discomfort of fullness and swelling in the thoracic-diaphragmatic cavity, or coughing and vomiting.

Tongue: Wet white or slippery white coating.

Pulse: slow and bowstring or sliding and bowstring.

   It stimulates lung diffusion and softens the liver, moves qi to relax the center, disintegrates accumulated depressed qi.

   * Do not use this formula on patients whose yin is too low or whose Jin fluid is too heavily consumed.

f) Hou Po Wen Zhong Tang - moves qi and warms the center, dries moisture and eliminates the discomfort of fullness. Applied to block the spleen by cold dampness and stagnation of qi movement. Manifestations such as swollen pain or feeling of fullness and swelling in the gastro-abdominal region with lack of appetite.

Tongue: white, greasy coating.

Pulse: Deep and bowstring.

  Ideal for qi stagnation syndrome associated with  damp and cold.

g) Ju Ha Wan - moves qi and soothes pain, softens and undoes nodules. It is used to treat orchitis, that is, painful swelling of the testicle. This pain may radiate to the navel region or testicular hardening.

h) Nuan Gan Jian - warms and tones the liver and kidney, moves qi and numbs pain. It is used to treat liver and kidney failure and cold syndrome, with manifestations of pain and cold sensation in the testicles, lower abdominal pain with preference to heat and aversion to cold, pale tongue and white coating with a deep and slow pulse.

   * It is prohibited to use for cases characterized by excess syndrome with painful and reddish swelling of the scrotum.

i) Liang Fu Wan - moves qi and soothes the liver, expels cold and soothes pain. Used to treat qi stagnation and freezing of cold characterized by pain in the gastro-abdominal region, chest choking, and hypochondral pain with a preference for warming and aversion to cold and dysmenorrhea.

   * It is inconvenient to use in case of stomach pain or pain because of accumulated anger and which are characteristic of insufficiency and weakness of the body.

2. LOWER IQ OR RELAX STAGED IQ

​

   Formulas that descend qi or relax qi stagnation are applied to treat coughing or regurgitation and vomiting, caused by inversion of pulmonary qi or gastric qi.

​

a) Su Zi Jiang Qi Tang - it is applied in cases where the patient is in a state of excess in the superior and insufficiency in the inferior characterized by wheezing cough and wheezing is a situation of excess. Manifestations of a lot of expectoration accompanied by wheezing cough with rapid and shallow breathing, muffled discomfort in the diaphragmatic chest region. Phlegm is white and fluid. Laxity and pain in the spine and knees or with edema in the limbs, white and slippery coating or white and greasy, bowstring and slippery pulse.

   It dominates the inversion of pulmonary qi and expectorates phlegm. Warms the kidney and promotes qi absorption.

   * It is prohibited to use to treat wheezing cough due to insufficient lung yin or wheezing cough due to lung heat.

b) Ding Chuan Tang - stimulates diffusion and controls inversion of lung qi, eliminates heat and transforms mucus. It is applied to treat asthma caused by cold wind blockage in the outer layer and accumulation of heat mucus characterized by an asthmatic cough with a lot of thick yellow phlegm accompanied by rapid breathing with slight chills in the cold wind, thick yellow coating and a rapid, slippery pulse.

   * It is prohibited to use for non-sweating asthma caused recently by cold wind or chronic asthma characterized by insufficiency of qi and weak pulse.

c) Xuan Fu Dai Zhe Tang - sinks lung inversion and transforms mucus, supplements qi and adjusts stomach. It is applied to treat disease with weakness and insufficiency of the gastric qi associated with internal obstruction due to accumulation of mucus with main manifestations of annoyance of obstruction in the region below the heart and which generates a blockage to the movement of qi in the same region, resulting in gastric reflux or choking or constantly eliminating frothy drools with a pale tongue and a slippery white coating, a bowstring and empty pulse.

   It is mostly used to treat gastric neurosis, chronic gastritis, stomach ptosis, gastric dilation, gastroduodenal ulcer, pylorus deficiency or obstruction, nervous choking, etc., provided they are characterized by gastric insufficiency and stomach inversion.
