TONIFYING FORMULAS
Toning formulas are those that work to nourish, tonify, or supplement qi-xue and yin-yang and are applied to treat failure syndromes.
1. Formula for tonifying qi (energy) - relationship with spleen and lung.
2. Formula to tone the xue (blood) - relationship with heart, liver and spleen.
3. Dual toning formula - qi and xue.
4. Formula to nourish yin - relationship with liver and kidney.
5. Formula for tonifying yang - relationship with kidney.
We always have to consider the balance between qi-xue and yin-yang. To tonify the qi we have to be careful as we can harm the Jin due to its dry nature. When tonifying the xue we must simultaneously apply tonifying herbs to the qi. When tonifying yin, tonifiers should be applied to yang as a request for support. When tonifying yang, we must nurture yin as a supportive measure.
When toning, we must protect the spleen and stomach as tonics can easily generate viscosity. Stimulus must be applied to regulate the qi and move the blood when using herbs or tonifying formulas for a long time. Always distinguish between true or false the cold-heat and deficiency-fullness or emptiness-excess.
1.TONIFY THE IQ
Toning the qi resolves physical weakness with characteristic weak and weak pulse, caused by insufficiency of spleen and lung qi or to treat diseases of ptosis and prolapse of certain organs such as uterus, stomach, rectum, etc.
a) Si Jun Zi Tang - tonifies qi and strengthens the spleen. Used for manifestations of a pale, shriveled, fatigued-looking face, lack of strength to speak (low volume), weakness in all four limbs, anorexia, and watery diarrhea.
Tongue: Pale with a thin white coating.
Pulse: fine and slow
It stimulates the spleen and adjusts the stomach, regulates qi and calms pain, treating spleen and stomach qi insufficiency with stagnation of cold mucus in the central heater with characteristic anorexia, constant belching, discomfort of fullness and heaviness in the gastro-abdominal region or associated with pain, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.
It is prohibited to use in cases of yin insufficiency and qi stagnation.
b) Shang Ling Bai Zhu San - Supplements qi, stimulates the spleen, adjusts the stomach and transforms moisture. This spleen deficiency damp syndrome causes discharge and diarrhea and/or lung deficiency causes phlegm.
It is applied to treat spleen insufficiency syndrome and moisture stagnation with manifestations of weakness of the four limbs, emaciation and stopped digestion, associated with vomiting or diarrhea, withered face without vitality.
Tongue: Pale with a greasy white coating.
Pulse: fine and slow or insufficient and slow.
This formula can be used to treat chronic gastroenteritis, anemia, chronic nephritis and vaginal discharge with moisture syndrome caused by insufficiency of the spleen. It is also used for coughing with a lot of sputum due to insufficient pulmonary Qi.
c) Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang - tonifies central qi (middle warmer), ascends yang and lifts what is sinking. It is used to treat heat syndrome due to spleen and stomach with deficient qi presenting manifestations such as discouragement and laziness to speak, fatigued appearance and generalized weakness, pale face, watery diarrhea, heat associated with sweating with a preference for hot drink.
Pulse: fiery and empty.
Tongue: pale and thin white coat.
It treats central qi sinking due to spleen and stomach qi vacuity with uterine ptosis, chronic dysentery rectum, chronic malaria, or ptosis of other internal organs.
It also has antipyretic properties and eliminates heat caused by insufficient qi.
It is prohibited in cases of heat due to insufficient yin and exuberance of heat.
d) Sheng Mai San or Sheng Mai Yin - Supplements qi, produces Jin, astringes yin and holds back sweat. For dual impairment syndrome of qi and yin with manifestations of generalized fatigue, shortness of breath and laziness to speak, dry mouth and throat. Used to treat chronic cough that damages lung qi with little sputum and dry cough, shortness of breath and spontaneous sweating, dry mouth and tongue.
Pulse: empty and thin or empty and weak.
It is inconvenient to use this formula before the surface pathogen is eliminated, nor to treat patients whose qi yin is not damaged by canicular heat disease.
2.TONIFY THE BLOOD (XUE)
These formulas are able to tone and nourish the blood and work to treat blood insufficiency syndrome.
a) Si Wu Tang - tone the blood and regulate menstruation. Used to treat blood insufficiency and stagnation syndrome with manifestations of dizziness and blurred vision, heart palpitations and insomnia, lack of vitality in the face, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea or hypomenorrhea, also for retention of postpartum lochia and blood nodules and pain in the lower belly.
Tongue: pale
Pulse: fine and wiry or fine and rough
It works to move and animate blood, remove liver depression and soothe pain. It has characteristics of:
- Toning the blood without causing viscosity
- Move the blood without causing bleeding
- To tonify the blood without weakening the blood movement
It is applied for malnutrition, anemia, imbalance of the vegetative nervous system, menopause, irregular menstruation, illnesses before and after childbirth, etc. as long as they correspond to the syndrome of blood insufficiency and blood stagnation.
b) Dan Gui Bu Xue Tang - tonify qi and produce blood. Used to treat internal injury caused by forced labor or excessive fatigue with exhaustion of qi-xue so that yang fluctuates, muscle heat and a red face, anxiety with dry mouth and eagerness to drink water, fiery and empty pulse, insufficiency of skin blood due to uterine bleeding with difficult recovery of the uterus or removing swellings.
This combination can produce yang and birth yin simultaneously, prosper qi, and enrich blood. Treats all types of anemia, allergic purpura as long as they originate in qi insufficiency.
c) Gui Pi Tang - tonify the qi-xue, stimulate the spleen and nourish the heart. Used to treat double heart failure syndrome-spleen and qi-xue with manifestations such as rapid heartbeat with palpitation, insomnia and amnesia, startle and dreaminess, anorexia and fatigue, pale and withered face or night sweat, false heat, tongue pale and thin white coat, thin and weak pulse.
Also used for all types of hemorrhage due to deficient heart and spleen such as hemorrhage in the stool and menorrhagia, etc. It performs rehabilitation or communication between the heart and the kidney, calming the heart and calming the mind.
Treats neurasthenia, purpura anemia, functional bleeding from the uterus, heart disease, duodenal ulcer bleeding, etc. Heart-spleen failure syndrome and qi-xue associated with failure of the spleen to confine blood.
d) Zhi Gan Cao Tang - Supplements qi and tonifies blood, nourishes yin and cleans blood vessels. Treats qi-xue and yin-yang insufficiency associated with heart palpitation and visible tachycardia, weakness and emaciation, with a feeling of shortness of breath, pale tongue, and lack of coating.
It supplements nourishing qi of organs and viscera, nourishes yin and tonifies blood, warms and moves heart yang, clears blood vessels, diffuses yang qi and tonifies without causing stationary viscosity.
Used to treat cardiac arrhythmia with delayed systole, heart disease, cardiac rheumatism, viral myocarditis, hyperthyroidism, etc. as long as characterized by yin-xue insufficiency and insufficiency of heart qi.
3. DOUBLE TONIFICATION OF IQ AND BLOOD (XUE)
It is Lubricant and laxative formula treats constipation due to dryness in the intestinal duct by exhaustion of fluid such as blood.
a) Ma Zi Ren - Lubricates the intestine and stimulates defecation, purges heat and moves the Qi in restricted Spleen syndrome with dryness in the stomach and intestine, constipation and urinary frequency.
Suitable for the elderly, physically weak patients or occasional constipation.
This formula is inconvenient to use in patients with yin insufficiency or pregnant women.
Key indication: excess dryness, lack of body fluids and blood.
4.TONIFY THE YIN
They are formulas to treat yin insufficiency syndrome with manifestations of pale, shriveled and sad-looking face, generalized weakness and emaciation, dry mouth and throat, distressing anxiety and insomnia, dry stools, yellow oliguria, irritable cough and dryness with absence of phlegm, malar redness, spermatorrhea with erotic dreams, pain and lassitude of the spine and back.
Pulse: Deep, fine and fast.
Tongue: Red with lack of coating and Jin fluid.
a) Liu Wei Di Huang Wan - Nourish the yin of the kidney and liver. For liver and kidney yin insufficiency, characterized by chronic pain in the spine and knees, dizziness and blurred vision, tinnitus, and even deafness.
Tongue: Red with little coating.
Pulse: Fine and fast.
Used for false fire exuberance syndrome due to yin insufficiency.
Used for nephritis, hypertension, diabetes, pulmonary tuberculosis, hyperthyroidism, menopause, amenorrhea, etc. This is applied to all liver-kidney yin insufficiency and caution is needed in case of failure of the spleen's transforming function.
b) Zuo Gui Wan - tonify and nourish kidney yin and preserve the essence used in case of true yin deficiency. Manifestations of blurred vision and dizziness, chronic pain and heaviness of the spine and knees, spermatorrhea and sperm incontinence, night sweats and spontaneous sweating, dryness of the mouth and tongue.
Tongue: Red with scant coating.
Pulse: Fine and fast.
Indicated in chronic disease, elderly patients or for the recovery period after febrile illnesses or yin insufficiency. Caution is needed in cases of spleen insufficiency (eg diarrhea).
c) Yi Guan Jian - Nourish yin and smooth the flow of blood and liver qi. Indicated for liver-kidney failure syndrome when blood is not free for liver qi to flow freely.
When the flow from the liver is stagnant, it manifests as pain in the thoracic-hypochondric and thoracic-gastric region, regurgitation of acidic or bitter liquid, dryness in the throat.
Tongue: Red and poorly moistened.
Pulse: Thin and fast or empty and wiry.
It can be applied to treat chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis (initial), chronic gastritis. Always with yin insufficiency associated with liver qi stagnation.
5.TONIFY THE YANG
These formulas are to tonify yang in renal yang insufficiency syndrome presenting pain and cold in the spine and knees, lack of heat and strength in all four limbs, spasmodic pain and cold in the lower abdominal region, oliguria or urinary frequency, male impotence and premature ejaculation, weight loss and general weakness.
Pulse: Deep and fine or slow and deep or slow and hidden.
a) Shen Qi Wan - Warms up tonifies the yang of the kidney. To treat renal insufficiency or yang characterized by pain and cold in the spine and knees, spasmodic pain in the lower abdomen, oliguria, or urinary frequency. Slightly tones the ming men, drains the turbidity from the kidney, and purges the liver fire.
Used in chronic nephritis, diabetes, hypothyroidism, asthma, menopause, etc., associated with renal yang failure.
Prohibited to use in case of false fire hyperactivity due to insufficient yin or in case of Jin fluid consumed by dry heat.
Pulse: Deep.
Tongue: pale and swollen.
b) You Gui Wan - warms and tonifies kidney yang. Tones and supplements essence and blood. Used to resolve renal yang insufficiency and ming men fire exhaustion with manifestations of weak energy with debilitated appearance (from aging or chronic illness), cold feeling and chronic pain and heaviness in the spine and knees, male impotence and spermatorrhoea, sterility or decreased appetite, urinary incontinence, spinal and lower limb fatigue and even lower limb edema.
It treats aging syndrome, osteoporosis, infertility, anemia and leukopenia, etc., caused by renal yang failure.
Prohibited to use in case of too much cloudy moisture due to insufficiency of renal yin.
